The “No-where, no-here” series of paintings seeks to uncover modern illusions of truth that are propagated through today’s media industries; it examines the ways in which our worldviews, attitudes and opinions have been carefully curated by entities that demand our conformance through selective truth-telling. Today, any point of view concerning any issue can be validated through skewed evidence presented in the media; we argue using information we believe to be fact not because it is fact, but because corporations have introduced it as such.

The geometric abstractions in “No-where, no-here” depict the malleability of our perception through luminous and rippling colours on canvas, which serve as a representation of the fabricated stories and headlines that media sources use only to increase readership. The geometric shapes, which disappear in an infinite perspective that sometimes extends beyond the surface of the painting itself, depict the difficulty of recognising truth and falsehood: where does fact end? And where does interpretation begin? Vertical lines mix gradations of color, causing a disruptive spectacle as a way of attracting attention.

The author Bangambiki Habyarimana says it best: “Truth is emotional, it is based on vested interests.” We see what we want to see, we hear what we want to hear — there is no way to tell it like it is because our own perspectives will have already altered the way we view and speak truths. The very truths we believe in are derived from a daily barrage of illusory news media. While we are tempted to view the world as black-and-white, we must be aware of our epistemic limitations; and only this awareness can bring us closer to the fluctuating idea of “truth.” While “No-where, no-here” strives to expose modern deceptions in news and social media, these paintings also recognize that they can only go so far as to model their own perspectives of truth.
